A Baltimore judge decided to let boxing champ Gervonta “Tank” Davis avoid jail time after he admitted to violating his probation from a hit-and-run that hurt four people, including a pregnant woman.

Instead of jail, Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy extended his probation for 18 months and made him donate $10,000 to the Community Assistance Network on Wednesday.

Davis, 30, who now lives in Parkland, Florida, admitted he left the state without permission. His probation officer in Maryland happened to spot him eating dinner at Proper Cuisine in Downtown Baltimore on January 22, which was just around the corner from the courthouses. Handy pointed out that Davis’ probation officer in Florida had been pretty lenient with him, even letting him take trips to the U.S. Virgin Islands and allowing him to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics to support Team USA boxing. However, his request to go to Japan for his 30th birthday was turned down.

Handy said she didn’t think sending Davis to jail would help him. “I don’t like sending anyone to jail, sir. I really don’t,” she said. “But you need to wake up.” She added, “I don’t ever want to see you in court again.”

This hearing is just the latest chapter in Davis’ legal troubles. The boxer, who’s 30-0-1, recently held on to his title after a draw with Lamont Roach.

Back in 2023, Davis pled guilty in Baltimore to four charges from the hit-and-run that happened in the early hours of November 5, 2020. He ran a red light at Martin Luther King Jr. and Washington boulevards in his 2020 Lamborghini Urus, hitting a Toyota Solara and crashing into a 7-Eleven fence.

Judge Handy had originally sentenced him to 90 days of home detention and three years of probation, but Davis violated the terms by staying at a Four Seasons Hotel and a $3.4 million penthouse in Locust Point, instead of staying at his coach’s house. He even called Handy “crazy” in an Instagram Live video, saying she “locked me up” just because he bought a property.

At Wednesday’s hearing, both of his probation officers recommended jail time. Kiya Yancey, his Maryland probation officer, said it’s often hard to get in touch with him, and she has to reach out to his team or lawyer to do so.

Assistant State’s Attorney David Owens suggested a $25,000 fine after talking to State’s Attorney Ivan Bates. But Judge Handy wasn’t sure why he was proposing that and decided not to go with it.

Davis’ lawyer, Hunter Pruette, asked the judge not to send his client to jail, explaining that Davis had completed all the probation requirements and done good work in the community. Davis apologized, saying he was training when he left for dinner, but Handy pointed out that he was actually out celebrating with a group of people.

After a couple of bench discussions, Judge Handy gave him an extended probation sentence. The only time she wants to see him back in her court, she said, is if he decides to go to law school and become a lawyer.
