Powerful thunderstorms are expected to sweep through Maryland on Wednesday.

Meteorologist Connor Belak from the National Weather Service’s Baltimore-Washington office predicts two waves of storms. The first will pass through the Baltimore region between noon and 4 p.m., while the second is expected between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

The earlier round is likely to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and a possible isolated tornado. The later storms, though less intense and widespread, will still bring unsettled weather to the area.

According to Belak, the stormy conditions stem from a large system that began days earlier on the West Coast. On Tuesday, it brought severe thunderstorms to Texas and Oklahoma, while blizzard conditions developed in Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado. The storm is expected to move toward the upper Midwest, with snow reaching Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, while the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic brace for thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.

After Wednesday’s storms, Maryland will see dry but windy conditions on Thursday, with gusts ranging from 40 to 55 miles per hour, Belak said.
